Maybe it isn't entirely fair, but Mathias wonders if perhaps Sookie's father didn't want to realize. There are plenty of things he thinks parents might ignore, just to make things easier and he knows he likely isn't above such a thing. "That's still so young," he says softly, thinking about it, thinking about how much his life might have changed had something so important happened at such a young age.

"Did the counselor realize?" he asks. On the island he thinks it would be easy for someone to believe something like that of a child, but he wonders how open minded teachers would have been in a different world. He can't imagine his own teachers having been very receptive to something like that.
